Hiring Guide for Employers

Hiring Household Staff as a Working Couple in Islamabad

Hiring helpers in Islamabad? Discuss your staffing requirement. This article is for employers, not a job vacancy.

When nobody is home all day, the constraint stops being skill and becomes trust, judgement and the ability to work unsupervised. What that changes about hiring.

Most household staffing advice assumes somebody is home. Someone to say what needs doing today, to answer a question, to notice that the bathroom was not properly done. For a working couple in Islamabad, none of that is available, and it changes the hire more than people expect.

The person you need is not necessarily the most skilled candidate. It is the one who can work for eight hours without being told what to do and without anybody checking.

What changes when nobody is home

Instructions have to exist in advance. A helper who is told each morning what matters today works well in a household with somebody in it. Left alone with no routine, the same person will do the visible tasks and leave the rest, not through laziness but because nobody has established priorities.

Judgement replaces supervision. A delivery arrives, a neighbour calls about a leak, the plumber comes early, a family member rings asking for something. Somebody has to decide. A candidate who freezes or who does whatever the last person to speak asked for is a poor fit however well they clean.

Trust is structural, not sentimental. The person has keys and the run of the house for most of the day. That is not a reason to avoid the arrangement — the overwhelming majority of these are entirely uneventful — but it is a reason to do the checks properly rather than on a reference and a conversation.

Feedback is delayed. You see the result at seven in the evening, not the work. That means problems get noticed later and corrections land further from the event, which is harder for both sides.

Hire for reliability over skill

In the trial, weight these above technique.

Does the candidate follow a written list without prompting? Give them the actual day's tasks on paper, in order, and leave them to it for two hours. Then look at what was done and in what sequence. This is the closest simulation of the real job you can run.

Do they report what they could not finish? A person who says "I did not get to the ironing, the laundry took longer because of the bedsheets" is describing the day accurately. One who says nothing and leaves it undone is the version you will be living with.

How do they handle an instruction that changes mid-task? Introduce one. Watch whether they ask a clarifying question, or silently abandon what they were doing, or refuse. All three happen and only one is useful.

Do they ask questions at all? Somebody who asks where things are kept, what the family eats, which rooms matter most, is building the mental model the job requires. Somebody who asks nothing on day one will be guessing for a year.

The routine is the job

For a working couple, a written routine is not administrative tidiness. It is the mechanism that replaces you being there.

Write the week rather than the day. Monday: floors, bathrooms, laundry load one, kitchen reset. Tuesday: floors, bathrooms, ironing, fridge check. Something on a weekly cycle — fans, windows, skirting, the oven. Something monthly.

Put it on one page, on the fridge, in the language the person reads comfortably. Not as a rule imposed but as the answer to a question they cannot ask you at eleven in the morning.

Then agree how exceptions work. If something urgent comes up, what gets dropped? If the plumber is coming, who lets him in and who supervises? If a delivery needs paying for, where is the money and what is the limit?

Households that do this find the arrangement runs itself within a month. Households that do not find themselves managing by text message all day, which suits nobody.

Access, keys and money

These need deciding deliberately rather than by drift.

Keys. A working couple will need to hand them over, usually sooner than a household with somebody home. Reasonable practice is a key after a short probation rather than on day one, recorded — which keys, when, how many copies — and recovered against that record when the arrangement ends. Candidates who have worked in well-run houses expect exactly this.

Money for household spending. A small float with receipts for everything, reconciled weekly. Introduced on day one it is simply how the house runs; introduced in month six it reads as suspicion. It also protects the person, which is the half that gets forgotten.

A named contact. One person in the couple owns the daily decisions, and the staff member calls that person. Two people giving instructions to somebody working alone produces contradictions nobody is present to resolve.

What to hire, in what order

If you have no children and eat one cooked meal a day: a part-time helper three to five mornings, covering cleaning, laundry and errands, plus a part-time cook in the afternoon if you want the evening meal handled. Between them this is less than one full-time wage and matches the actual work.

If you have school-age children: the school run is usually the binding constraint rather than the housework. A morning-and-afternoon driver, or the school van, plus a part-time helper. Households here frequently hire a full-time all-rounder when what they needed was transport.

If you have a baby or a pre-school child: this is a different hire entirely and should be made for childcare specifically rather than added to a cleaning role.

If somebody starts working from home: revisit the whole arrangement. A house with a person in it all day generates meaningfully more work — meals, tea, tidying — and a scope written for an empty house will not hold.

Checking work you did not see

You need a way to know how things are going that is not standing over somebody.

Check once properly in the first fortnight — a real look at the bathrooms, under things, the corners — and say something about what you find, good or bad. A standard nobody appears to notice drops within two months, and this is doubly true when nobody is present.

After that, a light monthly check against the written routine is enough. Households that establish the standard early almost never need to police it afterwards.

And ask. "What is making the job difficult?" produces concrete, useful answers far more often than people expect: there is not enough time for the ironing, the cleaning supplies ran out three weeks ago, two people are asking for different things.

The commute cuts both ways

A working couple usually chose where they live for their own commute, and that decision quietly determines who can work for them.

If you are in the central sectors, your staff member's journey is short and the arrangement is robust. If you took a house past the airport or in one of the newer societies because it was the right size for the money, the person cleaning it faces the same journey you do, without a car and at a fraction of the wage.

The practical consequences: hire locally wherever you can, because proximity beats experience over three years in this situation. If you have accommodation, use it — for a household that is empty all day, a live-in arrangement is also the only version where somebody is present. And if neither is available, set the start time to when transport actually runs rather than to when you leave for work.

Households that ignore this replace staff every spring and conclude that nobody reliable is available out there. The staff are available; the journey was not.

Reviewing it when your own life changes

The scope you write in your first month describes the household you had then. Working couples change faster than most.

A promotion that adds travel, a partner moving to a job with later hours, somebody shifting to working from home, a parent coming to stay, a baby — each of these changes the work in the house substantially, and a routine written for two adults who are out from eight to seven does not describe any of them.

Put a date in the calendar once a year, read the page you wrote, and ask what is no longer true. Then adjust the hours, the tasks or the wage rather than letting the gap absorb itself into the person's day, which is what happens by default and is the most common reason these arrangements end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to leave staff alone in the house all day?

For the great majority of households, yes, and it is the normal arrangement for working couples across Islamabad. What makes it sound is verification at the start — original CNIC, a permanent address recorded, a previous employer telephoned by you — plus keys recorded and access that widens over time.

Should I install cameras?

At entrances and in shared areas, most staff accept it and it is unremarkable. In private spaces where somebody works alone it is intrusive and tends to produce resignations. If you install anything, say so rather than concealing it.

How do I manage when I travel for work?

Name one contact who is reachable, leave the routine and the float arranged in advance, and agree what happens if something breaks. Our guide to managing household staff while you travel covers the longer absences.

Full-time or part-time for a couple with no children?

Count the honest hours. For two adults in a flat or a modest house it is rarely more than five a day, which is a part-time arrangement. Hiring full-time means paying for presence rather than work, and in a house that is empty anyway, presence is not what you are buying.
