Companionship, meal support, errands and help with an established routine should be discussed explicitly. Do not assume that a general caretaker is qualified to perform clinical tasks; describe any nursing requirement separately so an appropriate professional can be considered.
Assess the work before confirming a hire
Ask about comparable support experience, communication and relevant references. Discuss how the person follows instructions, reports a concern and handles a change in the routine. Arrange an introduction involving the person receiving support where appropriate. Any task requiring specialist training should be assessed by the responsible qualified professional rather than inferred from the job title.
Put the arrangement in writing
Name the household contact, explain reporting arrangements and define access to private rooms, money or documents. Agree duty periods, breaks and relief coverage; a live-in arrangement should not imply continuous duty.
