Separate general help from specialist work
Write a room-by-room and task-by-task brief. Include kitchen preparation, dishwashing, serving, tidying and approved errands only where they are part of your requirement. Tell the team whether another cook or cleaner already works in the home. A helper should not be expected to independently prepare specialist meals, drive your car or deliver clinical care without the relevant skills and a separate agreement. For a male helper, state your preference alongside the tasks and hours.
Make the daily priorities realistic
Explain which tasks must happen at fixed times and which can wait. Preparing lunch, collecting shopping and cleaning several rooms may compete for the same period. Describe the number of occupants, floors and any equipment or lifting involved. Agree who supplies cleaning materials and demonstrates safe use. If the helper supports an existing cook, choose one person to coordinate instructions so conflicting requests do not create avoidable delays.
Assess ordinary tasks and agree the first week
Use a short paid assessment with clear instructions, tools and an agreed finish time. Look for careful handling, communication and willingness to clarify an unfamiliar task. Confirm authorised errands, spending limits and receipt handling before any purchases. For live-in work, discuss accommodation, privacy, meals and time off separately from the duty list. Review the routine after the first few shifts and resolve changes with the worker rather than extending the role without agreement.
Salary, agency fee and next steps
