Live-In Staff, Done Properly
Accommodation, hours, pay and boundaries: what actually makes a live-in arrangement last.
What a Live-In Arrangement Actually Means
A live-in staff member resides at your property, in accommodation you provide, and is available across your household day rather than for a fixed block of hours. In Pakistan this is a long-established arrangement, particularly for cooks, maids, domestic couples, nannies and caretakers, and for many larger households it is the only practical way to cover the work.
The distinction that matters is not simply where someone sleeps. It is that a live-in role reshapes the relationship: your household becomes their home environment as well as their workplace, and the boundaries that a live-out arrangement sets automatically have to be set deliberately instead.
What You Must Provide
Accommodation is the obvious one, but the detail is where arrangements succeed or fail. A private room with a door that locks is the baseline most candidates expect, along with access to a bathroom and somewhere to store personal belongings securely.
Meals are the second component. Most Pakistani households provide meals as part of a live-in package, and where they do not, a food allowance should be agreed explicitly rather than left vague. Ambiguity about who pays for what is one of the most reliable sources of resentment in live-in arrangements.
- A private room, not a shared or transitional space
- Bathroom access and a clear understanding of when
- Meals included, or a stated food allowance instead
- A defined weekly day off that is genuinely time off, not on-call
- Agreed rules on family visits and personal time
The Working Hours Problem Nobody Plans For
The single most common failure in live-in arrangements is hours quietly expanding to fill the day. Because the staff member is physically present, small requests keep arriving after their working hours have technically ended, and because they live there, refusing feels harder than it would for someone heading home.
The households that keep live-in staff for years, rather than cycling through them, are the ones that set an actual end to the working day and respect it. Write the hours into your agreement, and treat anything beyond them as genuinely exceptional rather than routine.
How Live-In Affects Salary
Live-in roles typically carry a lower cash salary than the equivalent live-out position, because accommodation and meals form part of the total package. That discount is real but it is not unlimited: a live-in salary far below the local market rate will lose you the candidate, board and lodging notwithstanding.
Be explicit about the full package when discussing terms. A candidate comparing your offer against a live-out role elsewhere needs to see the accommodation and meals valued, not just a lower number. Our salary guide covers current monthly rates by role, and those figures are a sensible starting point to adjust from.
Privacy Runs Both Ways
Households naturally think about their own privacy with someone living on the property, and that is a fair consideration to raise openly. What gets discussed far less is the staff member having none at all: no space that is genuinely theirs, no time when they are not observable, no ability to make a private phone call.
Both sides need somewhere to be off-duty. Getting this right is not a courtesy, it is the practical difference between an arrangement that lasts years and one that quietly deteriorates over a few months.
When Live-Out Is the Better Choice
Live-in is not automatically better because it sounds more comprehensive. If your household lacks genuinely separate accommodation, if your needs actually fit predictable daily hours, or if you would find a permanent additional resident difficult, live-out is the more honest fit and will produce a more stable placement.
Apartments in particular often suit live-out better, simply because the accommodation a live-in arrangement genuinely requires is not there. Forcing a live-in arrangement into a space that cannot support it is a common and avoidable mistake.
Verification Matters More, Not Less
Someone living on your property has continuous access to your home, your belongings and your family, including at hours when nobody else is awake. The verification case is stronger here than for any other arrangement type.
Every live-in candidate Staffly places has completed the same full process as every other role: CNIC checked against NADRA records, a Police Character Certificate obtained from their own local police station, and previous employers called directly by our team rather than a reference letter accepted at face value.

Common Questions
Do I have to provide a separate room?
Yes, in practice. A private room is the baseline nearly all live-in candidates expect, and arrangements without one tend to end quickly. If you cannot provide separate accommodation, a live-out arrangement is the more realistic option.
Are live-in staff cheaper than live-out?
In cash salary terms usually yes, since accommodation and meals form part of the package. The total cost to your household is closer than the salary difference suggests once you account for food, utilities and the space itself.
Can a live-in staff member have visitors?
That is for your household to decide, but decide it explicitly and say so before they start rather than leaving it unaddressed. Unspoken assumptions on both sides are what turn this into a conflict later.
What notice applies if a live-in placement ends?
The same notice period you agreed for the employment itself should apply, and it matters more here because the person also needs to arrange somewhere to live. Ending a live-in role with no notice is where otherwise reasonable terminations become genuinely difficult.
