Sales and after-sales support can share a telephone channel without sharing the same purpose. An Islamabad employer should define whether an employee is helping a prospect decide, assisting an existing customer or doing both under a clear arrangement. A vague “calling role” can lead to mismatched hiring and confused customer conversations.
Start with the reason people contact the business. A new enquiry may need qualification and product explanation. An existing customer's problem may need investigation, an approved answer or escalation. The employee should not treat every support contact as an immediate sales opportunity.
Map the two call paths
Write what each path is meant to achieve and who owns the next step. Sales may lead to a proposal; support may lead to a case or operational action. If one employee handles both, explain how they recognise the transition and record it.
State which claims and commitments are permitted in each role. A salesperson may not know the current status of a service issue, while a support agent may not be authorised to negotiate a new agreement. Shared access to a phone does not resolve those boundaries.
Use a mixed fictional call queue
Give candidates three short call summaries and ask them to route or handle each under the supplied process.
| Caller | Main need | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| New prospect | Wants to understand service fit | Discovery and approved product explanation |
| Existing customer | Reports an unresolved issue | Support record and appropriate escalation |
| Existing customer with new request | Wants a different scope | Separate the current issue from the proposed commercial change |
The third case is especially useful. The candidate should not lose the support issue when discussing a new service, or imply that buying more is necessary to receive help with the existing arrangement.
Test a transition in one conversation
Have the fictional customer begin with a service problem, then ask about an additional option. Ask the candidate to summarise both needs and explain the next steps. A useful answer keeps two distinct outcomes visible: the existing issue's resolution path and the new request's review.
The record should show who owns each. One broad note saying “customer interested” may cause the unresolved complaint to disappear from view. Conversely, a support-only note may omit the customer's requested commercial follow-up.
Assess the right communication skills
For sales, look at relevant questions, accurate explanation and product fit. For support, look at evidence handling, next-action clarity and authority limits. A confident pitch does not prove support judgement, and a careful support response does not establish closing experience.
If the vacancy genuinely combines both, assess both. Explain the time allocation and how conflicting priorities are managed. Candidates should not be recruited for a quiet support desk and then judged mainly against outbound sales targets they were not told about.
Define performance measures separately
A completed sale and a resolved support case are different outcomes. Do not combine them into a single activity count that hides quality. Review whether the employee used the correct process and whether any handover was accepted.
Ask the candidate how they would record a sales call that reveals an existing service issue. The answer should preserve the issue and route it appropriately. It should not become a negative sales result without any support action.
Plan the knowledge and access
The employee needs current approved information for the work assigned. If support status sits in a different system, explain how they obtain it. Do not encourage guessing because switching systems is inconvenient.
Where the roles are separated, provide a concise handover format. The customer should not have to repeat the full story simply because the first employee answered the wrong queue. At the same time, share only the information needed for the receiving role.
Choose the vacancy title from the work
Describe the channel mix, customer type, shift, systems and decision boundaries. Staffly can discuss sales recruitment in Islamabad or customer-service recruitment once the main responsibility is clear. Confirm placement pricing separately from salary and any sales incentive.
Ask the candidate to write two next-action lines for the mixed call, one for the existing issue and one for the new request. If both lines name the same owner, they should explain why that person has the relevant responsibility. This prevents a single convenient assignment from hiding the fact that two different decisions remain.
During onboarding, review a few mixed calls and check whether the employee identifies both needs accurately. A clear division helps the business hire for the right skills and prevents a customer's support request from being treated as merely another chance to sell.
