Hiring Guide for Employers

Hiring Staff From Facebook Groups and OLX in Rawalpindi: What You Are Actually Getting

Hiring helpers in Rawalpindi? Discuss your staffing requirement. This article is for employers, not a job vacancy.

Online listings are free, fast and full of candidates. They also carry a specific set of risks that a household should understand before answering one.

Search for domestic staff in Rawalpindi on any classified site or in any of the local Facebook groups and you will find dozens of listings within minutes. Cooks, drivers, helpers, guards, attendants, all available, many with photographs and phone numbers. It is the fastest and cheapest way to reach candidates that has ever existed in this city, and a lot of households now start there.

It also has a failure profile that is different from any other hiring route, and worth knowing before you make the first call.

What the online route is genuinely good at

Reach. You can see more candidates in an evening than a reference network would produce in a month, which matters if your requirement is unusual — a cook who can manage a specific diet, a driver with heavy-vehicle experience, somebody willing to work in a particular area.

Speed. Responses come in hours.

Price discovery. Listings show you what people are actually asking for, which is genuinely useful if you have no idea what a role should pay. Compare it against our salary guides rather than treating the lowest asking figure as the market rate.

And direct contact, with no intermediary taking a cut.

The three specific risks

Identity is unverified and easily faked. A photograph and a phone number prove nothing. Documents shown on a phone screen are not documents. The person who arrives may not be the person in the listing, and in the worst cases the CNIC produced belongs to somebody else entirely. This is the risk that matters most for a role involving keys, children, or an empty house.

Experience claims are unverifiable and routinely inflated. Listings describe ten years of experience in five-star hotels with a frequency that the hotel sector cannot support. There is no cost to claiming anything, so everything is claimed.

There is a genuine scam layer. Advance-payment schemes are the common one: a "registration fee" or "documentation charge" requested before anybody is introduced, after which contact ends. A related pattern is a listing that is actually a broker harvesting household details and addresses. The markers are a fee before any meeting, pressure to decide immediately, refusal to meet at an office, and an unwillingness to let you contact previous employers.

What is missing compared with a placement service

Everything that constitutes checking. No documents verified against originals, no permanent address confirmed, no previous employer contacted, no matching of the candidate against a defined role, and no recourse if the arrangement fails in week two.

There is also no filtering for suitability, which is less dramatic but more commonly the problem. Online hiring produces a high rate of early departures simply because nobody assessed whether the candidate and the household fit — the candidate needed work, the household needed somebody, and the mismatch surfaced in month two.

Our verification process sets out what should be established before a stranger starts working in a home, and none of it can be established from a listing.

How to use online listings safely

If you are going to hire this way, and many households will, these steps close most of the gap. They take one afternoon.

Meet in a neutral place first. A tea shop, an office, anywhere that is not your house. Do not give your home address until after you have met and decided to proceed. This single rule removes the most serious risk in online hiring.

See the original CNIC, in your hands, in daylight. Check the photograph against the person. Read the name and the permanent address. Write both down. If the original is unavailable for any reason, stop.

Insist on a previous employer's number and call it yourself. Not a written character certificate, which in this market can be produced by anybody. A call. Ask what he was employed to do, how the job ended, and whether they would employ him again.

Never pay anything in advance. No registration fee, no documentation charge, no advance salary before work has started. Every version of this is a loss.

Run a paid trial before any commitment, and for a live-in role, before anybody moves in.

Tell somebody. Have a family member present at the first meeting and at the trial.

The Rawalpindi context

The local Facebook groups for this city are active and some are genuinely well moderated, with members who post honestly about candidates they have employed. Those are more useful than the open classified sites, because there is at least a community with reputations in it.

The open sites are thinner. A substantial share of listings are posted by informal brokers rather than by candidates, which is not disqualifying but does mean the fee conversation is coming, and it means the person describing the candidate has never employed him.

Rawalpindi's proximity to Islamabad also produces a specific pattern: candidates listed in Rawalpindi who are in fact looking for Islamabad wages, and who will take a local job for a few months while looking. Nothing wrong with the ambition, but if continuity matters to you, ask directly what he is looking for and where.

What the comparison actually reduces to

Online listings are a channel. An agency is a channel plus a process.

If you will do the process yourself — the neutral meeting, the original documents, the reference call, the paid trial, the written scope — then listings are a legitimate and cheap way to find candidates, and plenty of good arrangements start there.

If you will not do those things, then the listing route is not cheaper than an agency. It is the same price as an agency, paid later, in the form of a failed hire or something worse.

The written scope matters more here, not less

Because online hires arrive with no context and no shared expectations, the written job description does more work in this route than in any other.

One page: what happens on an ordinary day, in what order, with times; what is weekly rather than daily; the hours, the rest period, the day off; the salary and the date it is paid; and what is explicitly not included.

Go through it with him before he starts, out loud, and give him a copy. Candidates found online have frequently had several short, badly defined jobs, and a household that arrives with a clear page is immediately a better employer than the last three. It is also the document that prevents the slow expansion of the role that ends most of these arrangements.

Our hiring checklist and employment agreement template cover the structure.

When to stop and use a service instead

There are situations where we would say plainly that online hiring is the wrong route, whoever you are.

A live-in role, where somebody will sleep at your property.

Care of an elderly or unwell family member, where a mistake is not recoverable.

Children travelling alone with a driver.

A caretaker for an empty house, holding every key.

In each of those, the consequences of an unverified hire are severe enough that the cost of proper checking is not really a discretionary spend. Everything else — a part-time cleaner, a mali twice a week, an office boy — is a reasonable place to use listings, provided you do the afternoon of checking.

The first fortnight, which matters more for an online hire

With a reference hire there is a network holding both sides to account. With an online hire there is nothing except what you build in the first two weeks, so build it deliberately.

Pay weekly for the first month rather than monthly. It gives both sides an easy exit if the fit is wrong, and it means a candidate who disappears has not taken a month's wages with him. Move to monthly once you are both settled.

Do not hand over keys, or the run of the house, in week one. Access can widen as trust is established, and a candidate who has worked in well-run houses will expect exactly that rather than being offended by it.

Check the work once, properly, against the written page, and say something about it. A standard nobody appears to notice drops within two months.

And hold the review at thirty days: what is working, what is not being done, what should come off the list, and whether the salary matches the job as it has turned out. Households that hold that conversation keep people; households that skip it are the ones surprised by a departure in month four.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are character certificates from a previous employer reliable?

Treat them as a starting point only. They are easily produced and rarely say anything negative. A five-minute phone call to a number you dial yourself is worth more than any letter.

What about candidates who say they have a police verification?

Ask to see it and look at the date and the issuing station. It is a genuine positive signal where it exists and is current. It is not a substitute for a reference call, because it speaks to record rather than to how somebody actually works.

Is it safe to let a candidate come to my house for an interview?

After a neutral first meeting, yes, with a family member present. Before one, no. Reversing that order is the single most common mistake in online hiring.

Do agencies charge more than what a broker on a listing asks?

Usually a broker's cash cut is smaller, because he is doing less. What you are comparing is a finder's fee against a verification and replacement service, and the honest question is which of the two you are actually buying.
