Assess the chef against the menu and service you need
Describe the number of diners, the style of food, the meal schedule and how often you entertain. Distinguish everyday meal preparation from more complex menu planning or event service. Explain the kitchen facilities, shopping arrangements and any restrictions the household requires the chef to follow.
What to assess before agreeing
Discuss experience with comparable meals and arrange a short paid menu assessment using an agreed brief. Review planning, portions, timing, organization and communication alongside the finished food. Ask how the chef handles changing numbers or a request outside the agreed menu. A broad job title is less useful than seeing how the person approaches your actual service requirements.
Put the scope and costs in writing
Specify whether shopping, inventory, serving and kitchen cleanup are included and whether another helper is available. Agree working hours, preparation time, weekly rest and how extra guests or late meals will be handled. Confirm ingredient budgets separately from wages and the agency fee, with a clear process for approving purchases.
- What menu and number of diners should the assessment cover?
- Which preparation, shopping and cleanup duties are included?
- How are extra guests and changes to meal times agreed?
